The First 5 Reflections

1. Playing Under Pressure: The "Flow" vs. The "Fear"

  • The Hook: The red "Live" light, the start of the service, or a technical glitch—pressure is the constant companion of the Sunday stage.

  • The Mindset: Shift from "Performance" (where you are the center) to "Service" (where the congregation's experience is the center). When the focus is on others, the "fear of failure" shrinks.

  • Action Tip: Deep breathing and "mental rehearsal" of the first 4 bars to build early confidence.

2. Dealing with Criticism: Sifting for the Gold

  • The Hook: A comment about the volume, the style, or a missed cue can sting for days.

  • The Mindset: Separate your identity from your utility. A critique of your playing is not a critique of your soul. Learn to ignore the "noise" but listen for the "gold" that actually helps you serve better.

  • Action Tip: The "24-Hour Rule"—never respond to a critique until a full day has passed.

3. Humility vs. Ego: The Art of Disappearing

  • The Hook: We are trained to be noticed, but called to lead others to notice something else.

  • The Mindset: True humility isn't thinking less of your talent; it’s using your talent to amplify the message, not the messenger. The most "pro" thing you can do is play exactly what the moment needs, even if it’s nothing at all.

  • Action Tip: Practice "supportive playing" this week—find one moment to play less so someone else sounds better.

4. Longevity in Church Music: Avoiding the "Gig" Mentality

  • The Hook: When Sunday becomes "just another gig," the fire starts to fade.

  • The Mindset: Longevity is built on rhythms of rest and personal worship. You cannot pour from an empty cup. To stay in it for 20 years, you must protect your "why" more fiercely than your "how."

  • Action Tip: Schedule one "input" day a month where you listen to music just for your own soul, not for a setlist.

5. Serving When You’re Tired: The Sacrifice of Praise

  • The Hook: It’s 6:00 AM, the coffee hasn't kicked in, and you’re emotionally drained.

  • The Mindset: Worship is often called a "sacrifice" because it costs us something. Some of our most powerful ministry happens not in our strength, but in our weakness. Your fatigue is the soil where true reliance on God grows.

  • Action Tip: Simplify your parts. When tired, focus on "excellence over complexity."
